Tenuta Terraviva is a family-owned winery in the hills of Tortoreto in the Province of Teramo, northern Abruzzo and only 1 kilometre from the Adriatic Sea.

Parcels of land were purchased in the area in the 1970s by Federica’s Grandfather, Mario, and have been farmed organically since 1998. Fruit was originally sold to other wineries but they started making their own wine in 2008, focussing on single vineyard and single varietal wines from indigenous varieties. The estate covers 25ha of which 18ha are currently in production, with vineyards planted on clay and sandy soils between 150 and 250m altitude. Old plantings of Trebbiano, Passerina and Montepulciano are planted to the old-fashioned pergola system.

Modern winemaking without additions is the theme here. Indigenous yeasts are used throughout, with all wines spending time in stainless steel tank, on their lees, before bottling.

Mario’s 43 is made from the oldest vines on the estate, trained to the traditional pergola system. The number corresponds to the age of the vines at harvest—Mario’s 43 relates to the 2015 vintage, 44 2016 and so on...  2015 was an extremely hot vintage and was kept for 3 months on the skins.

12 months on lees in  stainless steel and 6 months in bottle before release.
