Working with organic growers in Conca de Barbera, Albert and Mariona have built a cult following for their beautifully packaged wines in bottle. A salty and focused white wine made from 40-year-old Parellada vines planted in calcareous soils at 500m above sea level.
Producer
Albert Canela and Mariona Vendrell started making wine in 2011 when they were just twenty. Based in the hills of Conca de Barber?, southwest of Barcelona in Catalonia and with investment from the local region, the couple farm organically and have a network of old-time growers from whom they buy their grapes. Catalonia's wine history is deeply and fundamentally linked to Cava and cheap ros?. This is no criticism; over-commercialisation has been the catalyst in many regions for brave, dynamic and pioneering young winegrowers to start swimming against the tide.
Farming and Winemaking
Certified organic and from 40-60-year-old bush-trained Trepat on calcareous clay soils. The vines sit at an altitude of between 500-700m. The bush-trained Trepat vines protect the grapes from the sun and produce fruit with large berries with thin skins, often compared to Poulsard from the Jura. Grapes undergo a rigorous selection and are then fermented with their natural yeast, given a gentle 35-day maceration and carefully transferred to large, used barrels for a brief maturation on the lees. Minimal use of SO2 here.
