As our name suggests, we look beyond the perceived 'top' areas to seek out new wines, and Marchampt is quite the place. Having tasted some excellent wines from some of the few growers that don't send their grapes to the co-operative in Quinci we are delighted to start working with Nicolas Chemarin. The vineyards are around 500m above sea level, the soil is very granitic, and the vineyards are steep. Nicolas grew up here, and it is a labour of love to work this site for him. He also has a foot in the future and the area's evolution. He has planted some Mondeuse, with the first harvest coming this year.
The fruit for P'tit Grobis Blanc comes from a parcel of Chardonnay planted on granitic sand in 2006-2010 by Nicolas just below his house. He farms his 8 hectares organically (although uncertified) and only ploughs once every three years The grapes are hand-harvested and then left to begin fermentation on skins for 8 days in tank. All the wines are fermented using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then pressed and put back into tank to finish fermentation and aged in a mixture of old foudre and tank. Bottled, un-fined and unfiltered.
